Organisers of the Athlone River Festival and Food Village have revealed details of what people can look forward to during the upcoming event, set to take place from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11.

There will be a unique event in Hoban’s car park, Castlebar, on Sunday August 14 at 1.30pm as part of a fund raising drive to help a very special local and worthy cause. As a part of the Newport Truck Run taking place from Ballina to Newport, more than 30 trucks will roll into the car park at 1.30pm and park and give all truck enthusiasts an opportunity to get up close and personal with these machines of the road. Truck drivers will be bringing their cabs from all over the island of Ireland to support this charity appeal. The trucks will remain there until 3pm and during that time everyone is invited to go along to this magnificent sight while helping the cause.

Castlebar Live presents nationally known folk singer, John Spillane, in concert this Sunday, July 31. The show will take place in Hoban's car park and is free to attend. Music kicks off at 6pm. and you will be kept entertained right through to 11.30pm. Castlebar band Jam Shugar will host the event and support acts include Uppbeat and Identity Thief.

A local TD has accused hospital authorities at the west's biggest hospital of poorly utilising scarce resources on capital projects which offered no respite from the persistent overcrowding crisis which dogs the facility.

Following the formation of the Croagh Patrick stakeholders group late last year which includes all the mountains stakeholders such as the church, Murrisk community, Mayo County Council, South West Mayo Development Company, Mayo Mountain Rescue, Croagh Patrick Archaeological Society, and the tourism and adventure sectors, the group has launched a a new map/information leaflet and signage for Croagh Patrick. The map is the first time that the route is clearly marked out on one ordnance survey sheet and will greatly assist users in navigating the route.

Dangan House, “beautifully situated on the banks of the fine river Corrib” directly opposite Menlo Castle, was built in 1684 as the seat of the Martin family. ‘Humanity Dick’ Martin was brought up there. John Redington purchased Dangan Demesne from Anthony Martin about 1830 and became the proprietor of the townland. It was, for a short time afterwards, converted into an Ursuline Convent. The nuns were there from 1839 to 1844. Dangan House was left to the Board of Guardians of the Galway Union for an auxiliary workhouse until 1854. The only trace of the original Martin building today is the tea-house folly which is on the banks of the river. A nearby property known as Dangan Cottage was leased by a number of American artists in the 1870s but was described as a ruin in the 1890s.
